The historian's note

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstoneは、Yellowstone National ParkのWyoming内に位置するYellowstone Riverの下流峡谷である。峡谷壁の特徴的な地熱着色—白、黄、オレンジ、および深い赤—は、流紋岩の基盤岩に含まれるさびた鉄鉱物とシリカ堆積物に由来する視覚的特徴であり、20世紀初期までにアメリカの観光業で最も多く写真撮影および複製されたランドスケープの特徴の1つとなった。川はLower Fallsで109フィート、Upper Fallsでさらに308フィート落下し、峡谷壁は800〜1,200フィート上昇している。20世紀半ばの透明フィルムとカラー印刷の改善に伴い、峡谷のカラー写真撮影が強化され、印象的な鉱物色をより高い精度で表現することが可能になった。1872年に確立された国家初の国立公園内のランドスケープとしてのこのサイトの状態は、地質学的ランドマークおよびアメリカの保全のシンボルとしての役割を確保した。
