高地の砂漠のどこかで、麦わら帽子とプレスの効いたカーキ姿の男が足を止め、アナグマに対処している。パンクしたタイヤに対処するために足を止めるのと同じ調子で。片手にハンマーを持ち、腰にはピストルを下げている。自然界のたいていの問題はそのどちらかで解決できると信じていた時代の、標準的な装備である。
アナグマの方はといえば、すでにセージブラシの中を悠然と立ち去りつつある。人間と渡り合った経験があり、勝てると踏んでいる動物特有の落ち着きだ。1950年代の放牧地は、捕食者や穴を掘る動物は理解すべき生態系ではなく、管理すべき厄介者だという考え方のもとで運営されており、ハンマーを持った男もその「管理」の一部だった。
ここには誰一人、動じている様子はない。それこそがこの時代の本領だった——野生動物との遭遇を、火曜日のちょっとした雑用のように扱うこと。写真には値するが、日常の流れを変えるほどのものではない、というわけだ。
