誰かがこの穴を掘ったのは、下の岩がこの穴の価値よりも価値があるだろうという確信に基づいていた。これが採石事業のビジネスプラン全体であり、掘削が地下水面より下に達するまでは機能する。その時点で、事業は静かに鉱山ではなく湖になる。生の崩石の壁は両側にいまだに爆発がそのまま残した状態で立ち上がっており、当時誰も排水について考えていなかったことの証拠である。
水はその独特な飽和した青色をしている。これは鉱物豊富な地下水が石の盆地に静かに溜まり、流れによって濁ることがない時に得られる色で、これは産業的失敗を風光明媚な展望台のように見せるという自然のやり方である。白樺と灌木はすでに岸辺の緩い砂利の植民地化を始めており、テナントが戻ってこないことを知っている地主の忍耐を持って移動している。誰も彼らを植えなかった。書類作業がそれに追いつく前に、彼らは放棄に気づいただけである。
残されているのは、同時に2つの仕事をしている風景である。静かに美しい場所になりながら、同時に、かつて男たちが金銭目当てで丘陵地に穴を掘ったことが目に見えて分かる。そこで働いていた男たちは、ほぼ確実に湖を後に残すつもりはなかったが、採掘が停止した後に採掘が常に後に残すものはこれである。
