誰かはこのために車を止めなかった。砂利肩が下端に群がり、ポールとセージブラシが高速道路の速度で傾き、全体のシーンは、走行中の窓からカメラを向ける人の、詰まった、ポーズのない幾何学を持つ。すでに半ば決定していた湖を思い出す価値があるとして、引き返すのは手間すぎたからだ。

1960年代までに、家族でのドライブ旅行は一種の市民的義務となり、Kodachrome スライドがその公式な記録となった。1つの牧場が湖岸に対して単独で存在し、単一の公益事業ポールがどこにも伸びていない。これは、かつて誰かがこの遠い牧畜地を電気で配線し、永続的に約束する価値があると決定したことの証拠である。

湖自体は構図の実際の仕事を行い、最後の平らな光をキャッチしながら、背後の山々は高砂漠の黄昏だけがもたらすブルーに消える。車の中の誰も、写真がそれを撮った理由より長く続くことを考慮しているようには見えない。
