Alguien no detuvo el auto para esta. El hombro de grava se agolpa en el borde inferior, el poste y la artemisa se inclinan a la velocidad de la autopista, y toda la escena tiene la geometría cargada e informal de una persona apuntando una cámara por una ventana en movimiento porque detenerse parecía demasiado problema para un lago que ya habían medio decidido valía la pena recordar.

Para los años 1960, el viaje por carretera familiar se había convertido en una especie de deber cívico, y la diapositiva Kodachrome era su registro oficial. Un rancho se sienta solo contra la orilla con un solo poste de servicios tendido hacia ninguna parte en particular, prueba de que alguien había una vez decidido que este tramo remoto de tierra de pastoreo valía la pena cablearlo para electricidad y comprometerse permanentemente.

El lago en sí realiza el trabajo real de la composición, capturando la última luz plana mientras las montañas detrás se desvanecen en el tipo de azul que solo produce el atardecer del desierto alto. Nadie en el auto parece haber considerado que la fotografía sobreviviría a la razón por la que la tomaron.
