1960年代のある時点で、誰かが気づいた――スケジュール通りにガラスの下で花を育てれば、実際の季節がそのような取り合わせをどう思おうと、赤いツツジを売る週と黄色いキクを売る週を同じにすることができるということに。通路の途中に停められた鉢植え用土でいっぱいの手押し車は、その仕事は写真を撮るために決して止まることがない、ただ撮影される間だけ一時停止するだけであることを示している。
これは庭ではない。それは庭のふりをした製造ラインだ――命令で咲くよう育てられた同じ植物の列、時間通りに色を配達することを望んだ市場のために。粗い木材の足場と奥の作業台に積み重ねられた粘土鉢は、ロマンスではなく反復に基づいて機能した商売に属している。結果はいつもロマンスのように写真に映るのだが。
誰もこの写真のためにポーズを取らなかった。生産者の全体的な根拠は花そのもの――赤、金、白が整然とした塊となって――その温室が正確にそのために造られたことをしていたという証拠だった。
