Irgendwer in den 1960er Jahren kam darauf, dass man, wenn man die Blumen nach Plan unter Glas zieht, rote Azaleen in derselben Woche verkaufen kann wie gelbe Chrysanthemen, ganz gleich, was die tatsächlichen Jahreszeiten von dieser Anordnung halten. Die Schubkarre voll Blumenerde, die mitten im Gang geparkt ist, sagt aus, dass die Arbeit für ein Foto niemals wirklich stoppt; sie hält nur lange genug inne, um aufgenommen zu werden.

Das ist kein Garten. Es ist eine Produktionslinie, die sich als einer ausgibt – Reihen identischer Pflanzen, gezogen, um auf Befehl zu blühen für einen Markt, der Farbe pünktlich wollte. Das Gerüst aus rauem Holz und die gestapelten Tontöpfe entlang der hinteren Bank gehören zu einem Gewerbe, das auf Wiederholung lief, nicht auf Romantik, obwohl die Ergebnisse jedes Mal wie Romantik fotografieren.

Niemand posierte für dieses Bild. Die ganze Sache des Growers waren die Blumen selbst – rot, gold und weiß in ordentlichen Blöcken – Beweis, dass das Gewächshaus genau das tat, wozu es gebaut wurde.
