1950年代初期から中期に、誰かがカメラを持ってコロラド川盆地に立ち、州間高速道路網とエアコンがそれを浪漫化させる前の南西部がどのように見えたかという風景を狙った。前景は色褪せた低木とアルカリ質の平原で、クレオソート灌木と散在するユッカで点在しており、何も約束せず約束を守ったような国だ。中景を横切ってはコットンウッドとヤナギで縁取られた川の回廊が伸びており、他のすべてが灰色である場所では緑だ。なぜなら、砂漠では水はそこに流れ、いつもそこに流れてきたからだ。その向こうには、地平線を横切る一本の彫刻的な線で、高台とメサの行列が立ち上がり、地質学は誰も読むことを学んでいない文書のように年齢を着ている。

写真家は全体の配置が一つの事実として読める程度に十分離れている:溝の中の水、それに続く生命、その後ろに立ち上がる石。目に見える居住地はなく、人間が何かをしていた証拠もない。この国は、それを横切ることと誰かが留まるのはなぜだろうという疑問を抱くことを除いて、あまり多くのことをしていない。これはダムと湖の前、ラスベガスが登り始める前、コロラドが川ではなく管理資源になる前の瞬間である。空虚さのスケールはとても完全で、意図的に感じられ、砂漠がそれが許すであろうもの、許さないであろうものを決めたようだ。

The historian's note

1936年のHoover Dam完成とLake Mead完成の後でも、アリゾナと南ネバダのコロラド川盆地の風景は1935年まで開発されずに残った。川の回廊自体はコットンウッド、ヤナギ、ソルトシーダーなどの河辺植生をサポートし、周辺のモハーベ砂漠の低木と対照をなしている。地平線に見える特徴的な隆起は、Lake Meadの南東部の地域、特にGrand Wash TroughやValley of Fireの周辺の形成と一致している。1950年代までに、この風景の写真は流域の過渡期を記録した:ダムと貯水池は水のパターンを変えたが、周辺の盆地は道路が少なく、インフラが最小限で、疎らに居住されたままであった。このシーンはダムの完成と1960年代以降に続く急速な地域成長との間の期間を記録している。
