かつてアメリカの景勝地の展望台には必ず、ポニーと鞍を所有する男がいた。彼は、親たちが我が子の一瞬だけ勇ましく見える写真に一ドル払うことをよく心得ていた。黄色いシャツの少年はこの役目を完全に理解し、ポニーがじっと立ったまま繋がれていることをまだ知らない者特有の、気負いのない自信をもってカメラに手を振っている。

彼の背後では女性たちが家族の幼い子供たちを押さえている。これがこうしたアトラクションでの実際の仕事だった――誰かが幼児を見守る間、別の誰かが五十セントの交渉をする必要があったのだ。展望台自体は、低い手すりと下の水面までの長い落差から見て、丘陵地帯を貫くハイウェイ沿いに点在していた、川の断崖に面した景勝地の一つを思わせる。家族が足を伸ばすために立ち寄り、代わりに誰も予定していなかったポニー写真を持ち帰る、そういう類の場所だ。

チェック柄のワンピースを着た少女は、必要とあらば少年を支えられるほど近くに立っている。これは子供たちの間の静かな役割分担そのものである――一人が乗り、一人が見守り、大人たちは裸足の幼児と日焼けを供給する。

The historian's note

ロードサイドのポニー乗り営業は、1950年代から1960年代にかけてアメリカの景勝地の展望台や観光客の立ち寄り所の定番であり、多くは州立公園やダムの展望台、川や湖を望むハイウェイの休憩スポットに隣接した小規模な独立事業として運営されていた。経営者たちはおとなしいポニーを何頭か鞍を付けて繋いでおき、短時間の監督付き乗馬を提供し、写真一枚あるいは決まった周回コース一周につき少額の料金を徴収していた。

この商慣行は二十世紀後半にかけて衰退していった。賠償責任への懸念、家族旅行の形態の変化、そして正式に整備された遊園地の台頭により、非公式なロードサイド・アトラクションへの需要が減少したためである。この写真のような記録は、子供向けの娯楽が柵で囲まれた施設内で購入されるものではなく、駐車場の片隅で即興的に用意されていた、今は失われた休暇文化の一層を証言している。
