子供が平坦な木立に囲まれた庭で茶色い馬にまたがり、手綱を、この動作に慣れた者特有のさりげない握り方で持っている。この情景は、馬がいまだ作業用の動物であると同時に子供の乗り物でもあった、そうしたアメリカの農村の土地柄を映し出している——まだ贅沢品ではないが、そうなりつつある途上にある。背後には電柱が立ち、柔らかな中景には小さな農業用建物と風車の幾何学的な形が見え、自給自足がなお当たり前だった場所であることをうかがわせる。彼女は白い綿シャツと青いジーンズという、当時どこにでもいた1950年代の子供の制服のような装いで、カメラに向かって、演技をするには幼すぎる者特有の屈託のない率直さで応じている。この写真は、子供と馬が過ごす夏の午後というこの種の農村の子供時代が、あまりにありふれていたためにそれが終わりに近づいていることを誰もまだ理解していなかった、そうした瞬間をとらえている。

The historian's note

1950年代の農村の子供時代は、一世代のうちに消えてしまうことになる家畜や農作業への直接的な関わりをまだ保っていた。馬はこの十年で、トラクターや車両が動物の労働力に取って代わる過程を完了させるにつれ、アメリカ農業の大部分において実用から娯楽へと移行しつつあった。写真に映る土地——電柱、風車、開けた庭を伴う——は、グレートプレーンズや中西部北部に見られる、分散し自己管理された農村の入植パターンを表している。1960年代までには、農業の集約化、郊外文化の拡大、馬の飼育費用の上昇により、こうした気軽な子供の乗馬はますます稀なものとなっていく。カラースライドという媒体そのものがこの瞬間を記録している。手頃な価格のカラーフィルムにより、家庭は日常の農場生活を新たな臨場感をもって記録することができ、最終段階にあった農村アメリカの視覚的記録を生み出したのである。
