黒いスパニエルが日に焼けたコンクリート段の上に座っており、細いロープもしくは首輪のようなもので繋がれている。犬が道路や他人の庭に迷い込むことを防ぐために必要とされていた、当時典型的な拘束である。この動物は屋外で繋がれることに慣れた犬の忍耐強く警戒心のある姿勢を示している。不幸ではなく、ただ配置されているだけである。その背後には、風化した石と白く塗られたコンクリートが、地中海あるいは南ヨーロッパの中庭もしくは路地と思われるものの粗い背景を構成している。犬が一日の半分を待ちながら過ごすような質素な家庭の空間である。カラーフィルムは白をクリーム色に褪せさせ、影を緑へと押しやっている。1950年代から1960年代初期にかけてKodachromeが行っていたのとおなじやり方である。全体的な場面に、観光客のスナップ写真と家族のスライドが持つやや露出過度の優しさを与えている。誰かがこの犬を撮影する価値があると考えた。形式的な肖像画としてではなく、タイルや光を撮影するのと同じ方法で、その場所の一部として単純に撮影したのだ。

The historian's note

この写真は20世紀半ばの一般的な配置を記録している。すなわち、家庭の中庭で短い繋ぎ紐につながれた労働犬もしくは飼い犬である。1960年代を通じて、地中海、南ヨーロッパ、そして北米の田舎の家庭ではこの慣行が標準的であった。非公式な家畜飼育と、その時代の日常生活の屋外構造の両方を反映している。スパニエル犬種──狩猟や警備に十分な大きさでありながら、質素な庭で飼うのに十分な小ささ──は当時の中産階級の家庭で人気があった。コンクリート段と白壁は、Spain、Italy、Greece、Portugalの第二次世界大戦後の建設もしくは改装と一致している。1945年以降、観光地や軍事写真家がそのようなシーンを広く記録していた場所である。
