A visitor in a floral bathing suit, a common sight in the 1970s, decided that standing directly within the path of a fountain spray would create an exceptional vacation photograph. The ancient terraced gardens, filled with carefully tended roses and towering cypress, served as the scenic-yet-challenging backdrop for this particular brand of self-documentation.
One imagines the careful instructions given to the photographer, attempting to capture both the subject and the watery special effect without obscuring too much of either. Such efforts were considered a worthwhile part of experiencing a historic site, transforming it into a personalised, if slightly damp, memory.
This arrangement of water, stone, and plant life, designed centuries ago for quiet contemplation, now primarily serves as an elaborate stage for human interaction with an optical lens. The results, as always, speak for themselves.
The historian's note
This image depicts the Generalife Gardens, part of the Alhambra complex in Granada, Spain. The Generalife was built as a summer palace and rural estate for the Nasrid sultans of Granada, primarily in the 13th and 14th centuries.
The gardens are renowned for their intricate water features, courtyards, and diverse plant life, including the iconic Water Stairway. It remains one of the oldest surviving Moorish gardens, providing a historical example of sophisticated hydraulic engineering and aesthetic design.
Today, the Generalife, along with the Alhambra, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a significant example of Islamic architecture and landscape design in Europe.
