Someone in the new capital planted a palm tree in the foreground and then, for decades afterward, every tourist photograph of this concrete water tower would include it, uninvited. Brasília was built fast and built proud in the late 1950s, a city poured from a blank plan onto the Brazilian plateau on the theory that a rational grid and enough reinforced concrete could produce a rational society. The tower itself is pure Niemeyer logic: one slender column holding up a flat mushroom cap, engineering treated as sculpture because the architects of Brasília never trusted a plain function to go unadorned.

By the 1960s the landscaping had caught up to the architecture, and the hedges and lawns around the monuments had the clipped optimism of a government that assumed its capital would photograph well forever. The tower stands with the calm of a structure that knows it is the point of the composition, indifferent to the tree that keeps getting in its way. Visitors came to see the future; the palm fronds came along for free.

What the picture actually preserves is the ordinary business of a planned utopia settling into daily use, water tank included, tourists included, someone's holiday slide included. Grand civic architecture rarely gets photographed without a stray branch, a parked car, or a bored tree doing its own thing in the corner.
