Qualcuno nella nuova capitale piantò una palma in primo piano e poi, per decenni a seguire, ogni fotografia turistica di questa torre idrica in cemento l'avrebbe inclusa, non invitata. Brasília fu costruita in fretta e con orgoglio alla fine degli anni '50, una città versata da un piano vuoto sull'altopiano brasiliano, secondo la teoria che una griglia razionale e abbastanza cemento armato potessero produrre una società razionale. La torre stessa è pura logica Niemeyer: un'unica colonna sottile che regge un tetto piatto a fungo, l'ingegneria trattata come scultura perché gli architetti di Brasília non si fidavano mai che una funzione semplice restasse senza ornamento.

Negli anni '60 il paesaggio aveva raggiunto l'architettura, e le siepi e i prati intorno ai monumenti avevano l'ottimismo ben tagliato di un governo che presumeva che la propria capitale sarebbe stata fotogenica per sempre. La torre si erge con la calma di una struttura che sa di essere il punto focale della composizione, indifferente all'albero che continua a mettersi in mezzo. I visitatori venivano a vedere il futuro; le fronde di palma erano incluse gratis.

Ciò che l'immagine in realtà conserva è la faccenda ordinaria di un'utopia pianificata che si assesta nell'uso quotidiano, serbatoio d'acqua incluso, turisti inclusi, la diapositiva delle vacanze di qualcuno inclusa. La grande architettura civica viene raramente fotografata senza un ramo vagante, un'auto parcheggiata, o un albero annoiato che fa il suo in un angolo.
