On the image
For tourists in the 1970s, a vacation destination like Segovia, Spain, demanded meticulous photographic documentation. People would travel great distances to stand on ancient stone overlooks, then carefully lift a camera to capture proof that the old things were still exactly where they had been for centuries.
A woman in a vibrant red coat stands on tiptoe, perhaps to gain a better angle on the Iglesia de la Vera Cruz in the valley, a structure designed long before photographic consideration. Her compact camera, a marvel of mid-century German or Japanese engineering, promised to perfectly replicate the scene, assuming the light held and the film was loaded correctly.
The man to her left and the other woman are also present for the grand confirmation of the view, participating in the ritual. This was how you proved you had been there, turning ephemeral experience into a tangible object that would sit in a slide carousel for decades, occasionally brought out to impress family members.
The historian's note
The photograph captures tourists observing the landscape from a high vantage point, likely the Alcázar of Segovia, Spain, during the 1970s. In the mid-ground, the prominent structure is the Iglesia de la Vera Cruz, a Romanesque church dating back to the early 13th century, traditionally associated with the Knights Templar.
This period saw a significant increase in international tourism to Spain following decades of economic growth and political stabilisation. Segovia, with its historic Alcázar, Roman aqueduct, and cathedral, became a popular destination for those seeking cultural and architectural experiences.
The scene illustrates the growing trend of leisure travel and the personal documentation of foreign sights, a common practice amongst middle-class travellers of the era.
