On the image
A narrow, stone-paved path descends through a village designed to evoke a simpler time, complete with thatched roofs and traditional-looking lanterns. This was the 1970s idea of a desirable vacation spot: carefully constructed authenticity where one could escape modernity without actually having to live without modern conveniences.
People in their smart casual attire, reflecting 1970s tastes, navigate the uneven flagstones, probably heading towards another thoughtfully rustic experience. The man in the dark jacket and what appear to be very specific trousers leads the way, seemingly unfazed by the potential for ankle-twisting.
A woman in a blue jacket, paused on the path, glances back, having likely sensed the photographer. She has inadvertently become a witness to the documenting of an era's travel expectations, confirming that even staged historical charm required personal souvenirs.
The historian's note
This image depicts Pueblito Paisa, a replica of a traditional Antioquian village, located atop Cerro Nutibara in Medellín, Colombia. Inaugurated in 1978, it was constructed to preserve and showcase the architectural and cultural heritage of the Antioquia region's rural towns. The village features a church, mayor's office, school, barber shop, and homes, all built to emulate early 20th-century styles.
Pueblito Paisa quickly became a significant tourist destination and a popular spot for locals, offering panoramic views of Medellín and a curated glimpse into a romanticised past. Its design allowed visitors to experience traditional Colombian culture in an accessible urban environment.
The photograph captures visitors engaging with this fabricated historical experience shortly after its opening, highlighting the growing trend of cultural tourism and the creation of purpose-built attractions to cater to it.
