Someone in charge of this terrace understood that a restaurant selling atmosphere needs the atmosphere to start before the food does. The row of clay pots lashed to the blue posts, spilling red and pink geraniums at exactly eye level, was not decoration left to chance; it was the fixed cost of running a place travellers would remember and mention to other travellers.

Behind the little painted gate, the actual business goes on without much ceremony: men in ponchos and hats hunched over lunch, a waiter in a white jacket working the tables, corn cobs strung up to dry over the doorway the way farmhouses have done for longer than anyone at these tables had been alive. The blue-and-red paintwork marks this as a deliberate, kept-up establishment rather than a lean-to, the kind of highland roadside stop that put real money into railings and pots while leaving the wooden chairs exactly as plain as they needed to be.

The low fence separating the dining terrace from the open walkway did the one job fences like this always do in places built for passing trade: it told a stranger, gently, that a table inside was worth paying for, and a bench outside was not.
