In the 1970s, people liked to build things on hills. This particular thing is a castle, probably because in earlier times, having a high vantage point meant you could see your enemies coming, which was considered good.
The modern building in the foreground, half-obscured by wind-swept trees, represents a different era where people preferred to build businesses closer to roads, assuming customers would find parking easier than conquering a fortress. The trees, however, seem oblivious to the march of progress, continuing to do what trees do, which is mostly stand around and get in the way of a clear view.
The whole scene suggests a period when human endeavours, ancient and recent, coexisted, each with its own logical imperatives, none of which involved anyone getting a good view of the castle without some strategic tree trimming.
The historian's note
This photograph from the 1970s depicts the Rocca Maggiore, a medieval fortress overlooking the town of Assisi in Umbria, Italy. Construction of the original fortress dates back to the 12th century, with significant rebuilding and expansion occurring in the 14th century.
The Rocca Maggiore served as a key defensive structure for Assisi, providing strategic control over the surrounding valley and protecting the Franciscan heartland. Its impressive silhouette against the sky has long been a defining feature of the Assisi landscape.
The image captures the architectural juxtaposition of these ancient structures with the more recent commercial developments in the valley below, typical of Italian landscapes where historical continuity meets contemporary life.
