Humans decided to build a town right at the base of an enormous cliff, directly under a waterfall that never stops falling. This was done presumably for the views, which must have been spectacular from the kitchen window, or perhaps simply because the land was flat enough.
The waterfall itself, a permanent fixture of raw natural power, regularly attracts visitors equipped with their 1970s cameras and an unwavering belief in the scenic overlook. They would stand, point, and record the event, satisfied that they had communed with nature. The fuzzy tree branches in the foreground indicate a deliberate attempt at art, common before everyone had a smartphone to capture perfect focus by accident.
It's a testament to human optimism, or perhaps just stubbornness, to settle in a place where an entire mountain could decide to come down for a visit at any moment. Or maybe, in that era, people simply assumed nature was mostly for looking at, and would behave itself.
The historian's note
Staubbach Falls, one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Switzerland, descends into the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Bernese Oberland. The image, dating from the 1970s, captures the iconic landscape with the village of Lauterbrunnen nestled on the valley floor.
The Lauterbrunnen Valley is renowned for its 72 waterfalls and dramatic U-shaped glacial formations. It has been a significant tourist destination since the 19th century, attracting visitors eager to experience the grandeur of the Swiss Alps.
This view shows the integration of human settlement within a powerful natural environment, typical of Alpine communities. The photographic style and colour rendition are consistent with amateur and tourist photography of the mid-20th century.
