A boatload of tourists motors past geological formations that existed long before package tours were invented, a testament to nature's indifference to human schedules. They came to see something ancient, expecting a profound experience, perhaps even a selfie if the technology had existed.
Instead, they are mostly just bobbing on the water, looking at rocks. Someone in the foreground is wearing a blue and white striped hat, a sartorial choice that screams "vacation in the 1970s" and also "easily identifiable in a crowd of similar tourists."
The natural world continues its stoic existence while humans invent new ways to briefly interact with it before returning to their hotel. The rocks, however, will still be there, largely unimpressed, for the next wave of visitors and their slightly different hats.
The historian's note
The image depicts the Faraglioni, three prominent sea stacks off the coast of Capri, Italy. These limestone formations are iconic landmarks of the island, carved by millennia of erosion from wind and sea.
During the 1970s, Capri was a well-established international tourist destination, known for its dramatic landscapes, natural caves, and luxurious atmosphere. Boat tours circumnavigating the island and passing through the Faraglioni's arches were, and remain, a popular excursion.
This scene captures a typical moment of 20th-century tourism, where visitors explored natural wonders from the comfort of organised boat trips, a staple of Mediterranean vacation experiences.
