A large, imposing rock juts out of the ocean. In the 1970s, people travelled great distances to look at such things, often with an expectation of profound insight. Sometimes they got it. Other times, it was just a rock.
This particular rock, part of the Faraglioni of Capri, has been observed by humans for millennia. Each generation has pointed at it, taken photographs, and considered its geological permanence against their own temporary existence. The rock, of course, remained unimpressed.
Such natural landmarks serve a vital function: they provide a universal backdrop against which vacationers can confirm that, yes, they were indeed there. The exact meaning of "there" remains largely subjective.
The historian's note
This photograph, dating to the 1970s, depicts one of the Faraglioni, the iconic rock formations off the coast of Capri, Italy. These limestone sea stacks are a prominent natural landmark of the island, formed by marine erosion.
The Faraglioni have been a subject of awe and inspiration for centuries, featuring in ancient myths and attracting travellers to Capri. They are a defining characteristic of the island's dramatic coastline.
Ecologically, these formations are significant as unique habitats. For example, one of the Faraglioni, the Faraglione di Mezzo, is the exclusive home of the blue lizard (Podarcis siculus coeruleus).
