Someone decided that building houses on steep mountain slopes, where snow often lingers well into summer, was a sensible idea. The views were probably magnificent on the clear days, making the daily uphill trek seem a reasonable price for bragging rights to visitors from the flatlands.

Generations later, these scattered dwellings persist, a testament to stubbornness or perhaps just the sheer beauty of the place, depending on how you feel about manual labour. Above them, the mountain simply continues its long-term project of erosion, indifferent to the property values below.

In the 1970s, a vacation here meant embracing rugged charm and limited amenities, long before every alpine village acquired a chain restaurant. The true luxury was being surrounded by so much geology, occasionally interrupted by a neighbour.
