Every family archive from this decade has one of these: a husband and wife standing squarely in front of the house, as though the house itself needed a witness. The maroon clapboard siding and crisp white trim were the postwar ideal made solid, proof that steady work and a mortgage could be converted into something with a front door and matching shutters.

The man in the cardigan and the woman in her good blue dress have dressed for the occasion of standing still, which was, in the 1960s, an occasion in itself. He tilts towards her with the mild satisfaction of someone who paid off a roof, and she leans in with the practised patience of someone who has posed for this exact photograph before, in front of other houses, for other reasons.

Nobody documents a rented flat this way. The camera is pointed at the siding as much as at the couple, because in this era a house was not just shelter but a scorecard, and this one, however modest, was clearly meant to be shown.
