Four boys in the buttoned-up, colour-blocked fashion of the mid-1960s stand under a bronze plaque that promises, in formal German, that people will remember. The plaque records a speech President Kennedy gave nearby in June 1963, the kind of civic gesture cities make when they want a moment to outlive the news cycle that produced it.
The boys are not looking at the plaque. They are looking at each other, at the camera, at anything but the actual object of commemoration, which is what happens to memorials within a year or two of installation: the adults who mean it move on, and the plaque becomes furniture that children stand near whilst waiting to be told they can leave.
Someone brought them here on purpose, probably a parent or teacher explaining history to an audience that would rather be doing almost anything else. The stone columns behind them have clearly outlasted several regimes already and will outlast this one too, indifferent to which president's face gets bolted to the wall this decade.
The historian's note
The plaque shown is mounted on the facade of the Rathaus Schöneberg in West Berlin, the building from whose balcony U.S. President John F. Kennedy delivered his address to West Berliners on June 26, 1963, including the phrase later remembered as "Ich bin ein Berliner." The speech was a landmark moment of Cold War diplomacy, delivered less than two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall, and was intended to reassure West Berlin's population of continued American support.
The memorial plaque itself, inscribed with a bronze relief portrait and commemorative text, was installed in the years following the visit to mark the site of the speech. The building served at the time as the seat of the West Berlin city government, making it a natural focal point for both the original event and its later commemoration.
By the mid-1960s the plaque had already become a minor tourist and school-visit destination, part of West Berlin's postwar civic identity as a city under direct American protection.
