Alguien se orillaba donde la carretera permitía una vista y decidía que esta cresta, este mosaico de campos de heno y esta disposición particular de graneros merecían un registro permanente. Esa es la tranquila confianza del viajero de ruta de los años 1960, conduciendo por carreteras de dos carriles a través de tierras agrícolas de Virginia o Pensilvania con una cámara en el asiento, seguro de que una larga montaña y un puñado de casas de granja blancas sumaban algo que valía la película.

Las granjas de abajo hacían lo que las granjas en este tipo de valle habían hecho durante dos siglos: tender heno en largas hileras cortadas y dejar que las líneas de árboles marcaran propiedades que nadie necesitaba una cerca para recordar.
