Qualcuno si fermava dove la strada consentiva una vista e decideva che questo crinale, questo patchwork di campi di fieno e questo particolare arrangiamento di fienili meritavano un documento permanente. Questa è la tranquilla sicurezza del viaggiatore su strada degli anni 1960, che guida su strade a due corsie attraverso le terre agricole di Virginia o Pensilvania con una macchina fotografica sul sedile, certo che una lunga montagna e una manciata di fattorie bianche aggiungessero fino a qualcosa che valesse la pellicola.

Le fattorie sottostanti facevano quello che le fattorie in una valle del genere avevano fatto per due secoli: stendere il fieno in lunghe file tagliate e lasciare che i filari di alberi marcassero proprietà di cui nessuno aveva bisogno di un recinto per ricordare.
