Alguém encostou o carro no acostamento, caminhou até a borda e tirou a foto que todo atlas rodoviário da época prometia existir ali: badlands cinzentos erodidos que se dobram rumo a um rio que, de alguma forma, ainda faz crescer alfafa. O turista dos anos 1950 acreditava que uma vista digna da National Geographic era devida a qualquer um com uma boa estrada e o tanque cheio, e esta entrega, mais ou menos, assim que se aperta os olhos para além da neblina.

Lá embaixo, junto ao rio, os campos são retinhos como régua, prova de que o canal de irrigação de alguém já havia domado a única faixa de terra que a erosão ainda não tinha alcançado. Os badlands acima permanecem tão inúteis quanto foram por vários milhões de anos, o que é justamente o propósito de parar para observá-los em vez de cultivá-los.

Ninguém no quadro, o que já era o estilo da época: a paisagem era o assunto, e a única tarefa do viajante era ficar para trás e deixar que o projetor de slides se encarregasse depois da vangloria.
