Alguien estacionó el auto en el acotamiento, caminó hasta el borde y tomó la foto que todo atlas de carreteras de la época prometía que estaba ahí: badlands grises erosionados que se pliegan hacia un río que, no se sabe cómo, todavía hace crecer alfalfa. El turista de los años 50 creía que a cualquiera con una buena carretera y el tanque lleno se le debía una vista digna de National Geographic, y esta cumple, más o menos, una vez que se entrecierran los ojos más allá de la neblina.

Abajo, junto al río, los campos están trazados con regla, prueba de que la acequia de riego de alguien ya había domado la única franja de tierra que la erosión aún no había alcanzado. Los badlands de arriba siguen siendo tan inútiles como lo han sido durante varios millones de años, que es justamente la razón para detenerse a mirarlos en lugar de cultivarlos.

Nadie en el encuadre, que también era el estilo de la época: el paisaje era el tema, y la única tarea del viajero era quedarse atrás y dejar que el proyector de diapositivas se encargara después de presumir.
