Sometime in the postwar decades, a young woman climbed a granite boulder at the edge of a high-country meadow and arranged herself in what the era understood to be a casually elegant pose — chin resting on hand, the mountains doing the heavy lifting behind her. She has her own camera in her lap, which means she was the kind of person who documented everything and trusted someone else to document her documenting, a division of labor that has never gone out of style. The subalpine valley below, the dense conifer ridge, and the serrated peaks behind suggest the southern Rockies — terrain that by the 1950s the National Park system had made accessible enough that a family car trip could end here, on this specific rock, with the mountains framed just so. She is not looking at the peaks at all, which is the real information: the scenery was the excuse, and being young and alive in the mountains in summer was the actual point.
