A man in a short-sleeved shirt sits on the crest of a rocky ridge, his back to the camera and to whoever thought to photograph him this way, which was the 1950s approach to capturing the grandeur of nature — put a small human in it and let the scale do the work. The low angle, shooting up through the fractured granite, was a deliberate compositional move that every serious amateur had absorbed from the outdoor magazines of the era, which had decided that heroic uplook shots were how mountains were properly documented. The dead tree beside him, all bare branches against an open sky, was the kind of accidental symbolism no one planned but every editor would have used. He is not looking at anything in particular, or perhaps he is looking at everything in the way people did before the activity required a branded hydration system and a GPS waypoint. The whole scene argues quietly that in the 1950s a man could climb to a high place, sit down, and simply be there, without it requiring a purpose beyond the sitting.
