A man stands at a wooden viewing platform on a sandy overlook, gazing down at a river that cuts through a dense coniferous forest in what appears to be the Pacific Northwest or Northern Rockies. The platform itself—a simple two-rail construction—is the kind of civic improvement that park departments of the 1940s built with the confidence that a good vista point would improve a citizen's character, or at least his appreciation of the government's foresight in preserving it. The river, bright and visible against the dark forest, has bent itself into a sharp curve below, the kind of feature that justified the entire platform's existence and the half-hour drive to reach it. He has positioned himself exactly where the photographer wanted him, a solitary figure contemplating a landscape that the era believed was both infinite and tamable, though the forest behind him suggests otherwise. The composition is that of a man who has been brought here to prove he understands the value of what has been shown to him.
