A young Scotsman stands on a gravel forecourt in full Highland dress — tartan kilt, sporran, tartan tie, and a double-breasted Argyll jacket — in front of a large touring coach, looking down at the camera with the composed expression of a man who has dressed this way before and sees no need to explain himself. In 1950s Scotland, Highland dress occupied a peculiar social position: simultaneously the national costume, the correct outfit for weddings and games, and the thing English visitors photographed as though spotting a rare bird. The coach behind him, a substantial mid-century motor coach of the kind that carried pipe-band parties, wedding guests, and Highland Games competitors across the country in an era before anyone had a car capable of doing the same job reliably, suggests he is either arriving at or departing from something that required his best tartan. The whole arrangement — the dressed-up man, the gravel car park, the idling coach — has the feeling of a Highland Games day, the sort of summer event at which every man in a kilt believed, not unreasonably, that he looked exactly right. What the photograph records without meaning to is the moment just before the event absorbed him: the pause at the coach door, dressed and ready, when someone thought it worth capturing that he had made the effort.
