Washington D.C. in 1958 was what Americans visited when they wanted to feel they lived in a serious country, and this couple made the trip in full dress — he in a pale summer suit with a dark tie, she in a navy sheath, both turned out as though the Republic might be watching. Behind them the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is carved into the limestone base of the National Archives, a building designed to communicate permanence so forcefully that it makes even tourists feel they should stand up straighter.

He is holding a small camera in one hand and a yellow folder in the other, which means he has already taken pictures of things and has picked up brochures explaining what he photographed. This was the standard operating procedure of the mid-century American tourist: document, collect, return home with proof. The folder is the part that dates him more precisely than the suit.

They are smiling with the specific ease of people who have no idea their afternoon in the capital will end up as evidence of how seriously a generation took its civic recreation — dressed for it, documented it, and filed the prints in an album that has now outlasted the occasion by sixty-six years.
