A man in his fifties, wearing a formal overcoat and fedora, stands on frozen lake ice beside a boy of about twelve, both facing the camera with the easiness of people who have been told to smile and know the moment will pass. Behind them, other skaters move across the ice—a winter social event that required no entry fee and no equipment rental, just a frozen surface and weather cold enough to trust it. The man's outfit, which would be normal office wear on a Monday, is also his weekend recreational uniform: formality was not something you changed out of. In the far distance, a settlement of low buildings hugs the far shore. The boy holds a stick, perhaps for balance, perhaps from habit, the way children carried things when parents said to hold on to something. Nothing here suggested that ice skating would soon become a capital expense requiring membership, lessons, and engineered environments—or that a man would ever need to change clothes to leave his house for leisure.
