Leaning out from behind a neatly trimmed hedge, a woman in a teal hat contorts herself into position to photograph the newlyweds walking up the path — the groom in a pale gray suit, the bride in a full-length white gown and veil, both moving with the careful dignity of people who have been told all morning that this is the most important day of their lives. The unofficial photographer, half-swallowed by shrubbery, represents the 1950s wedding's second tier of documentation: the aunt or family friend who brought her own camera and was absolutely going to get the shot, regardless of what the foliage had to say about it.

Wedding photography in this era operated on the assumption that one good posed portrait outside the church covered the occasion, which left considerable room for the amateur fringe to scramble around hedges filling in the candid record. The couple appears not to have noticed, or is too well-trained to react. They walk arm in arm with the slightly glazed forward focus of people navigating a ceremony that started at ten and will not fully end until sometime next week.
