Two women have stepped out of a suburban house for a snapshot, dressed in the full mid-decade uniform of midi-length full-skirted dresses and kitten heels, the kind of outfit that in the 1950s required roughly equal effort whether you were going to a garden party or answering the door. The woman on the right has committed further with a pearl necklace, which in that era was less jewelry than punctuation — the sentence of a woman's appearance was not considered finished without it. They stand with the easy arm-around-the-shoulder posture of relatives or close friends who have been photographed together before and know the drill, the lattice porch rail of a clapboard house behind them placing this firmly in middle-class American domesticity. The abstract-print skirt on the left and the bold plaid dress on the right represent the era's cheerful faith that pattern mixing was something that happened to other people. What the camera records without meaning to is the brief Saturday-afternoon pause before everyone went back inside — the entire occasion being the fact of the camera, which was reason enough.
