A couple has paused in the middle of a grand historical setting, presenting themselves for the camera with the earnestness typical of 1970s vacationers. His spectacles and burgundy cardigan, her white jacket and bell-bottom jeans, speak to a time when casual comfort was the height of travel fashion. They are here to experience history, and to prove it.
They stand in front of the legendary Court of the Lions fountain, whose ancient, stylized beasts have endured for centuries, now serving dutifully as an exotic backdrop for vacation photos. The water still flows, presumably.
Behind them, other tourists mill about, equally confident in their chosen attire and photographic methods, all intent on capturing their own fleeting moment with something genuinely timeless. The carved walls and arches continue their silent work of being ancient Moorish architecture.
The historian's note
This image captures a tourist couple at the Court of the Lions (Patio de los Leones) within the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, during the 1970s. The Court of the Lions is a central patio of the Nasrid Palace, built in the 14th century, and is famous for its fountain supported by twelve marble lion sculptures. The Alhambra itself is a sprawling palace and fortress complex that served as the residence for the Nasrid rulers of the Emirate of Granada, representing the pinnacle of Moorish art and architecture in Spain. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a significant landmark in European history and tourism.
