Three women arranged themselves on a flight of stone steps outside what was clearly a building of civic importance, the kind with columns tall enough to make ordinary citizens feel appropriately small. Each wore her good coat, her good hat, and the particular smile reserved for a photograph that would later be shown to relatives as proof of a successful outing.

The dog was not consulted about any of this. A white, thick-coated Samoyed sat directly in the center of the composition with its tongue out and its attention nowhere near the camera, having correctly identified that nothing interesting was happening. It anchors the group with more authority than the architecture behind it.

Hats in 1950s America were still doing serious social work, signaling that a woman had dressed for an occasion rather than merely left the house. The building did the same work for institutions. Only the dog seems to have understood that the whole afternoon was, structurally, just standing around in nice clothes near some rocks.
