By the 1970s, the original vision of a movie palace had curdled into something else entirely. What had been built in the 1920s as a shrine to the Hollywood dream—the ornate upswept roof, the hand-painted tiles, the ceremonial bulk of the thing—was now a tourist apparatus, its forecourt lined with the kind of commercial signage that made it impossible to see the building as anything but a machine for moving people through a transaction. The marquee burned neon. The crowds gathered not to worship cinema but to stand where famous feet had stood, which is to say they came to stand where millions had already stood, doing the same thing. The architecture had won the battle against its own grandeur and lost everything in the process.
The historian's note
The TCL Chinese Theatre (originally Grauman's Chinese Theatre) opened on Hollywood Boulevard in 1927 as a flagship palace cinema designed by C. Howard Crane. By the 1970s it remained the most famous theater in the world, but the architecture and exhibition model it embodied were already obsolete. Television had fractured the audience and centralized moviegoing had become diffuse. The building survived not as a working theater for a unified film culture but as a landmark attraction, its footprints-in-cement the draw that superseded the films themselves. The color slide captures the shift: the neon signage on the marquee and the casual daytime crowd indicate a venue operating as public monument rather than temple of entertainment.
