1970年代までに、映画宮殿の本来のビジョンは全く別のものに変質していた。1920年代に建設された—装飾的に反り上がる屋根、手描きのタイル、その儀式的な塊—ハリウッドの夢の聖堂として建てられたものは、今や観光装置であり、その前庭は、その建物を取引を通じて人々を移動させる機械以外のものとして見ることを不可能にするような商業的看板で埋め尽くされていた。マルキーはネオンで燃えていた。群衆はシネマを崇拝するために集まるのではなく、有名な足が立っていた場所に立つために集まっていた、つまり彼らはすでに何百万もが立っていた場所に立つために来ていたのであり、同じことをしていた。建築は自らの壮大さとの戦いに勝利し、その過程で全てを失っていた。

The historian's note

TCL Chinese Theatre（元々 Grauman's Chinese Theatre）は1927年にハリウッド・ブールバードに、C. Howard Crane によって設計されたフラッグシップ型の映画館として開館した。1970年代までに、それは世界で最も有名な劇場のままであったが、その具現化していた建築と展示モデルはすでに陳腐化していた。テレビは観客を分断し、集中化された映画館通いは拡散していた。その建物は統一された映画文化のための稼働している劇場としてではなく、ランドマーク的な魅力として生き残った。セメントに刻まれた足跡は映画そのものを凌ぐ引き付ける力となっていた。カラースライドはこの転換を捉えている。マルキーのネオン標識とカジュアルな昼間の群衆は、娯楽の神殿というより公開記念碑として機能する施設を示している。
