Every summer weekend in Door County, Wisconsin, a certain kind of American vacation reached its natural conclusion: someone built a wooden staircase down a bluff toward Green Bay, and several dozen people in sun hats decided to walk it at the same time in opposite directions. The zigzagging boardwalk here was exactly the kind of modest infrastructure the Wisconsin state park system installed to let ordinary tourists feel they had earned a view they could have mostly seen from the parking lot.

The group descending in the foreground has the unhurried confidence of people who have just had the experience and are now processing it. The couple near the bottom, one in a bucket hat and puffer vest, moves with the deliberate pace of retirees who have scheduled this particular Tuesday for scenic appreciation and are executing the plan on time.

Door County in 2002 was in a long, steady run as the Midwest's default answer to 'somewhere nice for the long weekend' — cherry orchards, fish boils, and overlooks like this one, all of it slightly unchanged since 1978 and entirely fine with that.
