Somewhere in the tropics — the dense canopy, the dark water below, the hand-hewn bamboo railings — a man in khaki shorts and a short-sleeved shirt stands on a plank footbridge and looks pleased with himself, which in the 1950s was the standard expression of a Western man who had just crossed something on foot that required balance. The bridge is entirely local construction: raw timber posts, bamboo poles lashed as handrails, planks that have clearly been making do for years. He is gripping the railing with the casual confidence of someone who crossed it once already and survived.
The outfit places him precisely: knee-length shorts, white socks, leather shoes, open collar. This was the standard-issue tropical administrator or company man's field uniform across British, Dutch, and French colonial territory in the 1950s — practical from the waist down, professional from the waist up, and slightly absurd throughout. A man could be posted to the interior of Borneo, the Congo, or New Guinea and dress roughly the same way, on the understanding that standards mattered especially when no one important was watching.
Whoever took this picture understood the assignment: get the bridge in, get the jungle in, let the man look purposeful. What it actually records is a particular era's confidence that the world's remoter corners were perfectly manageable, provided you kept your socks up.
