Somewhere in the American South, on a pale sandbar caught between dark water and denser woods, a family has built a small fire and declared it a camping trip. The two adults hold cups in the manner of people who have decided that coffee heated over an open fire is categorically superior to coffee made at home, a belief the 1950s held with great conviction and no supporting evidence. Two small girls sit in the sand in their everyday clothes, because the postwar American family did not yet require specialised gear for every leisure activity — you simply drove somewhere, built a fire, and called it wilderness. The man in the blue shirt crouches with the alert posture of someone who is nominally in charge of the fire and therefore of the whole expedition. The family looks satisfied in the way that people look satisfied when the plan worked out, before anyone has admitted that sleeping on sand is uncomfortable.
