On the image

Someone is up on the roof, and from the ground there is no way to know if he is there to fix something or just to look at the mountains, which in this part of Oahu were doing their best imitation of a movie backdrop. The building underneath him is a corrugated-iron warehouse of the kind every sugar or pineapple operation in the islands built by the mile in the 1950s, flat-roofed and windowless, designed by men who assumed nobody would ever photograph it and were wrong.

The steel tank beside him held water for fire suppression, a detail nobody thought about until the one week a year it mattered. Industrial Hawaii ran on structures exactly this plain, because the scenery was free and the roofing was not, and nobody in 1955 was budgeting for a view.

The Koolau ridgeline behind him would still be there long after the warehouse rusted through, which is the quiet joke of every plantation-era photograph: the mountains never needed maintenance.
