Someone in the 1960s decided that the frontier needed a gift shop, and so a row of log cabins was built new to look old, arranged along a gravel walk with a precision no actual gold-rush town ever managed. The notched corners are crisp, the paint is fresh, and the little signboards over each door suggest each cabin has been assigned a purpose more suited to postcards than to survival.
A planter of petunias sits at the porch rail of the foreground building, the kind of civic touch that no homesteader would have bothered with but every roadside attraction insisted on. The empty gravel lot in between is built for tour buses that have not yet arrived, wide enough to hold a crowd and currently holding none.
Behind the cabins, a power line crosses the sky on ordinary utility poles, the one detail the builders could not disguise. The past, it turns out, runs on the same electric grid as everyone else.
