A wildlife researcher working in the 1960s climbed into a forest canopy armed with color film and the assumption that observing primates in their natural habitat was a task best done by getting as close as possible to the branches they occupied. The monkey clings to a tangle of pale limbs backlit by breaks in the dense green canopy, apparently indifferent to the human presence below, which was the whole point of the exercise—to document behaviour as though the observer were not there, a methodological hope that worked better in theory than in practice. The saturated colour palette and soft focus speak to the limitations and costs of early colour film stock pushed into shadowed forest environments, where the apparatus of field science met the unforgiving optics of dense shade and distance. What the researcher believed they were capturing was objective animal behaviour; what they were actually recording was the ease with which mid-century naturalists convinced themselves that their presence in the canopy changed nothing about what they were watching.
