On the image

An aircraft descending toward shallow tropical water caught this view of the seafloor in sharp detail—coral heads and sandy patches rendered in the bright greens and whites that only happen when sunlight penetrates ten to twenty feet of crystal water. The photographer was doing what pilots and marine surveyors have done since aerial reconnaissance became routine: looking down at geography that looks nothing like it does from the surface. What the frame reveals without meaning to is the confidence of mid-twentieth-century observers who believed they could read the ocean from above, that clarity and altitude solved the problem of understanding what lay beneath. The white forms scattered across the blue are probably coral formations or sand ripples, the ordinary architecture of a reef system, but seen this way—from above, at speed, through a camera—they become a pattern to be studied rather than a place to be in. This is what certainty looks like when you are moving too fast to be wrong.
