The procession crosses the sand in matching white, the kind of disciplined little march that in bullfighting culture announces that everyone present has agreed, in advance, to take the afternoon seriously. Behind them the stands are only half full, the upper tiers empty in the shade, which is the tell of a novillada rather than a marquee corrida: young or lesser-known performers, a crowd that came for the ritual more than the reputation of any single name on it.
The picador enters last on a gray horse, unhurried, the traditional order of entrance being one of the few things in the ring that never changes no matter how thin the ticket sales. Around the barrera, hand-painted panels for Bacardí, Gordon's gin, and Coca-Cola do the sponsoring work later taken over by television, each brand betting that thirst outlasts nerve. Everyone below has rehearsed this walk; nobody in the seats has any way of knowing yet how the afternoon actually ends.
The historian's note
This is a paseíllo, the formal opening procession of a Spanish-style bullfight, photographed in a provincial or secondary bullring in Mexico during the 1960s. The presence of a mounted picador entering after the cuadrillas on foot follows the standard sequence of a novillada, an event featuring novice bullfighters (novilleros) rather than full matadors, typically held in smaller rings or as a training and proving ground for younger performers.
The hand-lettered advertising boards for Bacardí rum, Gordon's gin, and Coca-Cola along the barrera reflect the period's common sponsorship arrangement, in which beverage companies purchased painted signage directly on the ring's perimeter wall, a practice widespread across Mexican and Spanish bullrings through the mid-20th century before uniform stadium branding replaced it.
Bullfighting in Mexico during this decade remained a major public entertainment, with novilladas serving as regular weekend programming distinct from the larger, more prestigious corridas featuring established matadors.
