A column of riders in bright satin shirts sweeps around a packed dirt arena in what appears to be a major American rodeo of the 1950s, the kind where the grand-entry parade was treated with the ceremonial weight of a military review, because the American West had recently finished turning itself into a performance of the American West. The grandstand opposite is packed to a density that would alarm a modern fire marshal, every seat taken by a crowd in summer whites who drove out on a Saturday with the settled confidence that this was exactly the right way to spend it. Along the arena rail, a line of men in white uniforms stands with the focused attention of people who have been assigned a role called 'official' without being entirely sure what it requires. The riders hold their formation with the disciplined looseness of people who have rehearsed this enough times that it looks effortless but not enough times that it actually is. The whole spectacle — the costume, the horsemanship, the tens of thousands gathered to watch it — rested on an unexamined agreement that the frontier had been worth celebrating just as soon as it was safely over.
