On the image

Someone pulled the car over on the new park road, walked a few feet into the brush, and took the photograph every visitor to St. John was by then obligated to take. The Virgin Islands National Park had only recently paved these ridgelines for exactly this purpose, on the theory that a scenic overlook justified itself if enough people stopped at it.

The historian's note

The Virgin Islands National Park was established in 1956 on the island of St. John, following a major land donation by Laurance Rockefeller, and by the 1960s the National Park Service had cut roads along the island's ridges specifically to give motorists access to overlooks like this one above the north shore. The crescent beach and turquoise bay in the foreground, with a chain of smaller cays visible offshore toward the British Virgin Islands, are characteristic of the protected north-shore coves the park was created to preserve.

This period marked the early transition of St. John from a quiet agricultural and fishing economy to a destination shaped around National Park tourism, with scenic drives and overlooks built as part of that new infrastructure.
